Language Arts Curriculum

Language Arts Curriculum

· Language Arts curriculum will consist of reading, phonics, writing and spelling. Instruction will occur in the resource room and the general education classroom. Our Language Arts curriculum will be based on Great Minds: Wit & Wisdom.
  • Reading will consist of reading an assortment of reading selections and completing comprehension activities that correspond with the second grade standards.
  • Writing will consist of an assortment of writing activities that derive from the Wit and Wisdom curriculum and focus on writing conventions, spelling, grammar and the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). We will focus on narrative writing, informative writing and opinion writing throughout the school year.
  • Phonics instruction will occur based on the Reading Horizons program. This is a web-based and research-based program. Students will have direct instruction and computer access to this program that integrates a multi-sensory approach, each student’s individual weaknesses, aligns with Common Core Standards and further develops the 5 Pillars of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension).
  • Spelling will consist of having students spell both phonetic and sight word (words that cannot be sounded out) to develop spelling skills. Spelling words will be modified as needed based on each student’s individual needs. Words will derive from the Reading Horizons lessons and may or may not occur weekly based on how quickly students work through Reading Horizons lessons.
